Teaching about Hanukkah during the Holidays!

Disclaimer- This post is written with good intentions about embracing all holidays.  I am a Christian woman but I believe that children should be exposed to all faiths during this season.  There is no one holiday that is better than any other– therefore only comment if you have something positive and that adds value.  All negative and rude comments will be deleted.

Last week I shared with you Santa’s Library and all the Christmas books that I include in it for the month of December.  Well, today I’m sharing with you a fantastic list of Hanukkah books for kids because the holiday season is not just about Christmas!

I include several of these Hanukkah books in Santa’s Library because I want my children to learn about all of the holidays that are happening during this time of year.  All too often people dismiss the other holidays and get mad about a flipping Starbucks cup or post hateful comments on social media because companies have switched to using “Happy Holidays” instead of “Merry Christmas”.  And the fact of the matter is….there are many holidays this time of year and by taking the stance that Christmas is the most important is just arrogance and ignorance.

We live in a multi-cultural society and should respect the way each person chooses to celebrate this season…..I mean, we are all celebrating the same core values….family, friends, togetherness, selflessness, etc.  We just celebrate in different ways with different stories, histories, and beliefs.  Instead of belittling other holidays I chose to embrace them and include them in our children’s lives.  I want my children to understand that everyone celebrates the holidays differently and that’s okay.

Just like Hubs and I have friends from many different cultures, our kids are going to grow up with friends who celebrate holidays other than Christmas and I want them to have an understanding of those holidays.  I want my kids to understand the meaning of a menorah and a kinara…by exposing them to how others celebrate I’m helping to mold them into inclusive and knowledgeable individuals.

By choosing a few of these stories to read during the holidays we are able to talk about all of the other holidays that are happening as well and it just makes the whole season that more magical!  So here is my list of Hanukkah books for kids….I found all of these in my local library and on Amazon. Whether you’re Jewish or not I encourage you to add some of these to your nightly reading and encourage multi-cultural learning this holiday season!
