Thought you might like to put a face to a name.
I’m here today because Melissa and I are Trading Blogs!  That’s right…she’s over at my blog right now sharing an awesome Easter craft.  Be sure to go and check out her crafty-work!
Ok, let’s get down to business.  I have got a SUPER easy and SUPER cheap pillow cover idea for you—I hope you love it!
The other day I went into Target for a few things but found myself wandering around the kitchen and home décor aisles (which we all know is d.a.n.g.e.r.o.u.s!)
I noticed that a lot of their dining linens were on clearance and I stumbled across some place mats that I absolutely loved!

I thought the yellow was perfect for spring and the price was perfect for my wallet.
But there was just one problem, there were only 2 left.  What’s a girl to do with 2 place mats?  Well, if you’re this girl you decide to make pillow covers out of them!

I love making pillow covers and have recently been making ones that are completely removable so I can change them out with the seasons, or my mood (whichever comes first).

If you don’t have a sewing machine, or do have one and don’t know how/don’t want to use it then this tutorial is for you!  There is no sewing involved at all.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Fabric place mat
  • Seam ripper
  • Velcro
  • Glue gun and glue sticks
  • Pillow form

Step 1: Find a cloth place mat that is double sided (meaning that the place mat should be made up of two different fabrics stitched together).

Step 2: Use a seam ripper and rip the seam on one of the short sides of the place mat.

Step 3: Measure the short edge of the place mat (the one you just worked on) and cut your Velcro accordingly.

Step 4: Warm up that glue gun!

(Excuse the feathers stuck to the glue gun from this project).
Step 5: Take one half of the Velcro and begin gluing it to one of the inside edges.  Don’t worry, the glue won’t show through the fabric! (that’s what I was worried about…)

Step 6: Repeat the process of step 5 with the other half of the Velcro on the second edge.

Step 7: Get your pillow form ready, and drop it into your new pillow cover!

The pillow form I had on hand was a little bit smaller than my placemat pillow cover but I made it work. Smile
Close up the pillow case by just pushing the two Velcro edges together.

That’s it! Wasn’t that easy??? And now when I want to change the pillow cover I just open up the Velcro and slip it off.

I don’t normally substitute hot glue for real stitching, but I knew that the Velcro is this pillow cover wouldn’t get very much action so it should hold up!

Now let’s play a little game called “Guess Which Side Is The One Closed Up With Velcro?”

What’s your guess????

Well, it’s the right side!  Hard to tell, isn’t it?

I love my new no-sew pillow cover and I think it look great with the sunny yellow pot on my bar stool turned plant stand.

I hope you all enjoyed this tutorial and will be inspired to make your own easy and cheap pillow cover! Maybe you already have a cute place mat laying around that you could use today!

It’s been so much fun trading blogs with Melissa and I hope to see you all over at Adventures of Our Fami-Ly real soon!

Funny - I made a pillow out of this same exact placemat! (Except I didn't get it on sale). I've also taken advantage of these types of placemats at Pottery Barn - often their placements use the same fabrics as their pillows/pillow covers, so it's a cheaper way to have Pottery Barn pillows. :)
