A Fun Dish to Cook with Kids!

As you know by now, I LOVE cooking with my toddler!  He’s almost 3 years old and we have so much fun cooking in the kitchen together!  I’m an avid believer that kids should be in the kitchen…it not only helps them mentally but emotionally as well.

Ever since I was a little girl, being in the kitchen with my mom and grandma was a great bonding experience.  I actually surprised my mom with a completely home cooked dinner when I was in 5th grade….now granted it was deli meat fried up in the skillet and some potatoes and microwaved carrots….but the point is….I was so proud of myself for having dinner on the table and ready to eat when she got home from work that evening.  The skills I used to make that meal were ones that I had learned through the years of helping her and my grandma out.  I knew I couldn’t pull off fried okra like my grandma or meatloaf like my mom…but I knew I could make a meal that everyone would enjoy and that was because mom and grandma trusted me to be in the kitchen with them.  So I’m trying to instill the same skills in my own children and the experience is priceless!

Little Man LOVES cooking!  Everyday when I go to start dinner he comes running after me calling out “I help mommy, I help mommy”.  So I’ve been working on coming up with simple tasks that he can help with and that make him feel included.  A few weeks ago he made this apple crisp pretty much all by himself….he was so proud of that apple crisp!  Cooking with kids does take a little extra time and prep work, but seeing the joy on their faces and the learning experience is just sooooooo worth it!

Okay, ready for this roasted red potatoes recipe?  It’s such a blast for the kids to make!
