All too often I hear other mothers saying “oh delete that pic I look horrible”, “oh I’ll take the picture I hate how fat I look on camera”, “I need to lose about 20 pounds and then I’ll be camera ready”, “you are NOT taking a picture of me…I hate having my picture made!”, “oh my hair is a disaster, let me take the picture” and on and on…..
But here’s the deal…you wait another day and there’s another reason to not get in the picture….you didn’t put on makeup, your hair is a mess, you need to get your eyebrows waxed, you want to lose weight first, etc…before you know it your kids are all grown up and there’s no pictures of mom.
Childhood is fleeting and we need to capture as many memories as possible when we have the chance because none of us know what tomorrow may bring.
When I look back at pictures of my childhood I think “my mother looks beautiful”, “oh I remember how much fun we had that day”, “wow, my mom really loved me”, “I can’t believe we did that…it was amazing”, “I’m so glad my mom was there!” and so on.
They didn’t have the opportunity to click delete– so whatever my dad or grandparents snapped that’s what we got. Mom’s hair in total disarray….got that. Mom looking half dazed early in the morning….got that! Mom sweating up a storm at Disney World….yep, got that one too! In all of these pictures I find my mom absolutely beautiful!
In none of these pictures am I looking to see that mom’s makeup is immaculate, that her clothes are stylish, that her hair is movie star flowing, etcetera….I’m looking back and seeing this amazing woman that took me and my brother to Disney World by herself because she wanted an awesome memory. I see this loving woman who wasn’t afraid to get her hands dirty leading my Girl Scout Troop in planting trees. I see this selfless woman smiling patiently as her daughter steals the camera yet again because she’s convinced she’s an aspiring photographer. I see this independent woman who raised 3 successful children. I see the woman I love most in this world…it’s a tie between her and my daughter anyway. 😉

See, I have all of these amazing pictures of my mom because she didn’t have the ability to immediately see the photo and say “oh no delete that I look bad”….back then she had to wait to take the film to be developed and wait several more days to get the pictures back….and that’s if she didn’t misplace the little 35mm canister for us to find several years later!
In this digital age we are recording everything yet capturing nothing at the same time.
It’s those imperfect moments that are the most fun and memorable. It’s those imperfect moments that our kids remember. It’s those imperfect moments that we’re real. It’s those imperfect moments that make us mom and give us the memories that will last a lifetime!
