Super Tip Tuesday: How to Get Rid of Gnats

Easily kill those pesky fruit flies with this simple trick!

So last week we took a last minute trip back to Atlanta.  When we returned home I immediately noticed a rather rancid smell coming from the kitchen…..yeah for super pregnancy nose! YUCK!  Anyway, I go to investigate what that AWFUL smell is emitting from and realize that I left a basket of fruit on the corner of the counter…..of course, now it’s melded into quite a disgusting little pile of sludge…..nothing like some yummy peaches, apples, and plums after 10 days away!!

Cursing myself for forgetting all that fruit I grab the basket and head to the trash can……..until I’m instantly attacked by the swarm of gnats/fruit flies that were gorging themselves on my tasty rotting fruit!  UGH!

Now, anyone who’s ever dealt with these pesky little creatures know they are a pain in the $#* to get rid of….they just keep multiplying and find any little crumb or drop of liquid to keep themselves alive and procreating!  Oh, and to make matters even worse…..we have company arriving in just a few hours…..what to do?!

Well thanks to my good friend Dawn (a person, not the soap) I found a solution that not only gets rid of these buggers fast but it doesn’t involve running around like a maniac swatting into thin air!

Ready for this super simple tip to get rid of gnats?

Dawn dish detergent (the soap, not the person) and apple cider vinegar!  Yep!  Get a shallow bowl and pour some Dawn dish detergent (yes, it has to be Dawn…I don’t know why Dawn works so much better but I used Palmolive once and it didn’t do nearly as well….I think Dawn is thicker and traps the little guys better)….anyway, pour some Dawn dish detergent in the bowl, make sure you go up the sides a little bit.  Then, pour a little apple cider vinegar in the center and leave the bowl out on the counter.  Within a few hours the bowl will have caught pretty much all of the gnats. 🙂

See the gnats/fruit flies LOVE LOVE LOVE apple cider vinegar….it’s like leading children to a box full of candy and saying “have at it”!  So the gnats push and shove each other out of the way to get to that oh so sweet nectar– what they don’t realize in their frenzied rush is that the Dawn works like quicksand and takes them out instantaneously!  Oh sweet victory….. Humans 1, Gnats 0!

Apple Cider vinegar with Dish soap works 99% times for me. In addition to this, I have had success with old fashioned fly strips.

Believe it or not incense helps rid them along with a gusty fan.
