A Yummy Soup Using Your Leftover Holiday Ham
The holidays are my FAVORITE time of year….everything is so festive and cheerful…and the food is so delightful! I love getting in the kitchen and making delicious recipes all year long but during the Holidays there’s something extra special about making comfort foods. The smells, the spices, the flavors….it warms the whole house!
I actually made this Ham Bone Soup Recipe on accident…..I mean, I was wanting to try a ham bone soup recipe but I didn’t realize that I didn’t have like 90% of the ingredients I needed. I remember my mom making a ham bone soup recipe when I was a kid and it was okay so that was my goal…..Little Man LOVES having soup for lunch after school so I try to mix it up for him.
Well, this ham bone soup recipe that I originally thought was going to be a complete failure turned out to be the BEST soup recipe I have EVER made! Yes, it was packed full of flavor and I’ve been eating it non-stop….I’m ready to make another ham so I can make another batch of this scrumptious soup!
The key to this soup is the ham bone. I HIGHLY suggest making your ham with my simple Holiday Spiced Ham Recipe that I shared yesterday…this is where a majority of your flavor and spices are going to come from.
Using a ham bone (or really any bones) to make soup increases the nutritional value exponentially! You get so many vitamins and nutrients from the marrow in the bones…not to mention flavor! Whenever I make anything for dinner that has bones I try not to just toss them…I always strive to make something else using the bones so that I don’t miss out on all the nutrients they provide. In fact, if you ever make a baked chicken (I have a delicious One Dish Chicken Meal Recipe here and an Oktoberfest Chicken Recipe here) use those bones to make some Homemade Chicken Broth with the slow cooker…..it makes the BEST chicken broth for cooking and soups!

Ham Bone Soup Recipe with Orzo Pasta

Ingredients:
Ham Bone (preferably using the Holiday Spiced Glazed Ham Recipe here)
1 cup diced ham
Large Stock Pot
1 Large Can Organic Diced Tomatoes
1 Can Organic Red Kidney Beans
1 Can Organic Pinto Beans
1 Cup Chopped Carrots
3 Medium Potatoes peeled and diced
1.5 Cups Orzo Pasta
1 Small Can Biscuits (optional)
Directions:
Place ham bone in large stock pot and fill with water until ham bone is completely covered.
Don’t worry about cleaning the meat off the ham bone….this is the MOST tender meat out of the whole ham and it will easily come off in the stock.
Boil ham bone for 1 hour.
Add in carrots and diced ham.
Continue boiling for 30 minutes.
Add full can of tomatoes….including juice.
Drain and rinse both cans of beans and add to soup.
Add in potatoes and cook for 15 minutes or until potatoes are al dente.
Add in Orzo pasta.
Cut canned biscuits into fourths and drop into boiling soup (if you want the dumplings to top the soup with…otherwise you can skip this).
Remove ham bone from soup and CAREFULLY remove the meat from the bone and put the meat back in the soup.
Toss the ham bone and any fat in the trash.
Soup is ready once the Orzo pasta and dumplings are finished cooking.
