All Natural Fabric Softener Crystals

The other day I shared with you my HE Friendly Laundry Detergent Recipe for Sensitive Skin. One thing that I love about the laundry detergent is that it’s scent free so I can use it on the kids clothes and I’ve gotten use to my clothes being scent free as well. But I do miss having my throw blankets and towels come out of the dryer all warm and cozy smelling.

So, I decided that I should add some fabric softener Crystals to my homemade laundry detergent recipe to get that extra oomph of fragrance back. Unfortunately I started looking at the ingredient labels on all of the fabric softener crystals out there and wasn’t a fan of what I was seeing. I mean, what’s the point of making my own laundry detergent if I’m just going to turn around and add chemicals back into my laundry!

And since this year we’re focusing on taking simple and affordable steps to natural living (make sure you’re following along– you don’t want to miss this series) I decided it would just be better to experiment around and create my own all natural DIY laundry crystals recipe.

So, if you’ve tried the homemade laundry detergent and loved how easy it was to make them you’re REALLY going to love how simple and inexpensive this DIY laundry crystals recipe is!

Start off with a glass jar…personally I love these blue Mason jars…they’re a perfect size at 16oz and they’re just so darn cute! Seriously, I bought the 12 pack off Amazon and you can find them all over my house. It’s always fun when you can make something functional decorative too. 😉

Then pick out your favorite essential oils and add about 20 drops to the Epsom salts. Now, its important that you use a glass container because the essential oils and salt will erode plastic. So make sure you get glass.

As far as scents go it’s all up to your personal preference. I actually have 3 of these jars in my laundry room right now. I have one with lavender essential oil that I use for all of the sheets and blankets. Lavender helps calm the kids and I believe makes bedtime easier…plus it just smells so relaxing when I climb in the bed. 🙂

Another jar has lemon and tea tree oils for hubs’ super stinky work shirts. Tea Tree oil also known as Melelueca oil has antiviral, antimicrobial, and antibacterial properties so it kills all the germs and stench for when Hubs has super busy days at work.

And then the third has my favorite essential oil blend Peace and Calming that I bought from a friend who sells Young Living Oils…that’s what I wash my sweaters in and I love it!

Personally I love getting my essential oils from Tropical Traditions because they carry Florihana Essential Oils at a great price!  Florihana essential oils are high quality, organic, all natural, and 100% pure.  No matter where you purchase your essential oils from make sure that you research how they are created and make sure you are getting a high quality, pure essential oil.

Anyway- pick your scent, add about 20 drops to 2 cups of Epsom salts and mix well. Then just add ½ Tbs to your laundry detergent when you start your load. You can adjust the strength of the scent by adding more or less oil. Just stay under 50 drops of essential oil…or you’ll overpower everyone around you! 😉

Now you never have to buy fabric softener Crystals again since you can just use this all natural DIY laundry crystals recipe.
